An attempt to overthrow the government occurred as the Prime Minister was in the hospital; as a result, the country became a militarized state, and hostages were released into military custody. Dymally argues that the 1970s drop in crude oil prices led to economic instability, and the middle-class emigrated to Canada. Following the disarmament of the insurgents, Dymally stressed the need for medical supplies and food, while stressing that there was no clear leadership and that many feared a military intervention from the United States, like the 1983 intervention in Grenada.
