<text>In this transcript of the press conference given by Alhaji Ali Baba, the Minister of Internal Affairs in Nigeria, he tells the press present at the Embassy of Nigeria Annex in Washington D.C. on February 14, 1983 about the immigration and “illegal alien” problem in Nigeria and how it is being dealt with. Ali Baba clearly states the law on immigrants and refugees in Nigeria and how they have followed United Nations regulations. He says that the refugees have violated terms which state that they can only stay in Nigeria for ninety days. The Nigerian government has declared their settlement a threat to their national security. At the time, many of the refugees in Nigeria were from Ghana, which was experiencing a famine. This document came from the Dymally collection and was sent to him by Moses F. Ekpo on February 17, 1983 in order to clear up what Ekpo called any “misleading press reports” on the “illegal alien” situation prior to this.

<text>In a letter to Dymally, an incarcerated person writes that he was encouraged to contact Dymally after reading about his work in higher education in a publication made available within the prison. He asks about obtaining a higher education in order to support his family, a wife, and three daughters, after completing his sentence. He states that the governor cut funding for college correspondence courses. He is employed in the "inmate's" Barber Shop and is only paid $3 a month. He does not have enough funds to obtain his goal. He writes this letter to Dymally in hopes to apply for Federal or state aid to continue his education.

The author says that law enforcement does not provide help, and discusses the robbery of his own house. In point number two, the author states that he was hijacked by highway patrol on 28 October 1973, accused of driving under the influence, as his flu/cold medicine contained two-tablespoons of whisky. <text>On February 22nd, 1990, the author sent this letter to Congressman Dymally and the Watch Commander of Compton Police to call attention to a recent event involving her daughter. As the letter states, “[her daughter] was attempting to drop her companions off at her girlfriends’ apartment when a minor infraction occurred.” The vehicle was stopped by police officers for an unspecified reason. They accused someone inside the vehicle of throwing a gun out the window, and then proceeded to verbally and physically abuse one of the male passengers. According to the author, “[her daughter] was shaken by this incident, [and] I feel you may have destroyed her faith in this ‘Great American System.’ She was emotionally distraught.” In the following paragraph, the author expresses her two main motivations for writing. She first requests that her letter become part of the record of the officers involved, indicating that “Under Code #6054, I am petitioning that this be done.” Secondly, she suggests that “There should be a more compassionate group of officers dealing with our young persons who have done no wrong.” Throughout the letter, the author refers to the police officers as accusatory, physically and verbally aggressive, and blind to justice. As a mother of a 17-year-old daughter, she did not want this incident to be forgotten and hoped it would help change the way police officers interact with the youth.
