Young's Oral History, part 1 Description An account of the resource Frank Yan introduces his mother’s background in Portland, Oregon, where his grandfather ran several businesses before returning to China when his mother was a teenager. He describes his parents’ arranged marriage in Toisan, his mother’s experiences in a Communist re-education labor camp, and how his mother escaped to Hong Kong and acquired visas for the family to immigrate to San Francisco in 1955 when Yan was one. Yan shares his early memories at the Chinese market his father opened in Tuscon, Arizona before opening a gift shop in Chinatown, Los Angeles, where Yan became one of the “Chung King Road Kids” directly represented in Leo Politi’s children’s book “Moy Moy.” Yan describes working at Hong Sang Lung market, joining Jeff Yang’s Golden Lion Dancers troupe, and attending Castelar Elementary School and Chinese school, where he describes his favorite childhood games and local foods. He concludes his interview about his “enjoyable childhood” by mentioning a prank in a cooking class, working at a drive-in hamburger stand in Inglewood, and how his mother’s home cooking gained demand in Chinatown. Winston Bong Young introduces himself as a third generation Cantonese Chinese American who moved from an integrated Los Angeles neighborhood to a majority white suburb in North Hollywood. He describes working at his stepfather’s restaurant in North Hollywood with his siblings and experiencing academic and social difficulties until deciding to study engineering, eventually pursuing his degrees and meeting his wife at Cal State LA. Young details his first hydraulic and aerodynamic engineering jobs at Salsbury, Aerojet, AiResearch, and Greer Hydraulics, and shares how and why he launched Young Engineering & Manufacturing Inc. in 1987. He describes parenting two children in San Gabriel, compares his and his wife's Chinese American upbringings, and recalls visiting his ancestral home in Guangzhou. Young reflects upon his lifelong friendships, infrastructural and demographic changes in Southern California, and involvement with the Firecracker 10K committee and Miss Chinatown pageant. He concludes his interview by stating the evolution of his Chinese American identity, his experience of local and international events, and intent to donate his estate to charity. Title A name given to the resource Pauline Tso's Oral History Description An account of the resource Pauline Tso, née Wang, introduces her early childhood in Nanjing, China, before the Japanese occupation and her father’s diplomatic missions forced them to evacuate. She describes her boat journey to, schooling in, and childhood memories of Surabaya in Java, Bombay [Mumbai] in India, and Port of Spain in Trinidad, before the Wangs settled in Los Angeles, California. Tso recalls an active social life at Los Angeles and Manual Arts High School and explains how the death of her parents prompted the President of Culver-Stockton College to offer her a scholarship. She details her campus involvement as a social member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority, an “oriental” dancer with a troupe called Variety, and working with the centennial chairman to invite Eleanor Roosevelt to campus. Tso also describes her summers working in Los Angeles including as a movie extra through Bessie Loo’s agency, dating Chinese boys in Los Angeles and a white classmate in college, and graduating in 1954 with the most honors in her class. Young's Oral History, part 2 Description An account of the resource Winston Bong Young opens his second interview by elaborating upon the culture shock of moving from Central City, Los Angeles to North Hollywood in seventh grade. He recalls how his work ethic developed from balancing childcare for his younger stepsiblings and working at his stepfather’s restaurant during junior high and high school. Young also mentions the surprising origin of his great-grandfather's poultry shop in San Francisco, and how his parents moved to Los Angeles due to their families’ disapproval of their marriage. Young describes his experience with assimilation and Asian American identity, his academic and social progress at LA Valley College and Cal State LA, and meeting his wife in the final semester of his undergraduate studies. He discusses marrying his wife and the birth of his daughter and son, facing housing discrimination in Alhambra and San Gabriel, and feeling stifled by employers during his career as an engineer. He shares how his health crises, losing his job, and becoming a parent and grandparent altered his priorities in life, and concludes his interview with the advice to pace oneself, pursue one’s passion or aptitude, and appreciate the present moment.
