On 9 March 1970, the students petitioned for a program that would help admit more Black students. Although the petition received over a hundred signatures, the administration did not take steps to address the issues outlined in the petition with recruiting students and the educational disparities that students of color face at UCLA. The most recent data from the American Association of Medical Colleges shows that while some progress has been made since this letter was written, the racial disparity among U.S. doctors continues to be stark. His efforts were either blocked by the democratic speaker Jess Unruh or by the courts. Regan was able to reach a compromise with state democrats later in the year this letter was written. Dymally faced harassment in the form of unsubstantiated claims of corruption and supposedly impending indictments of crimes several times throughout his career. While no charges were ever brought against him, he suspected one such incident may have cost him the reelection to Lt. Governor. His opponent Mike Curb accused him of criminal behavior in San Bernardino and Santa Clara Counties. The accusations caused a scandal, but no charges were brought. Dymally Papers Description An account of the resource Mervyn Dymally (1926-2012) served as California State Assemblyman for the 52nd and 53rd District, and as State Senator for the 29th District. Dymally completed a Bachelor of Arts in education at California State University, Los Angeles in 1954. Dymally is known for breaking barriers as a black lawmaker in California and in Congress after moving to the United States from his native Trinidad at age 19.
